  • Year Group Focus—Year 5

    Fri 06 Mar 2026

This week in Year 5, we have been looking at why the moon appears to be different shapes over the month. The children experiemented using torches and ball to represent the Earth, Moon and Sun. The children loved seeing this change in real life and can’t wait to look at the moon tonight!

Last term, the children were studying the different forms of graffiti art and were able to design their own name tags. We looked into the ethics of this art and whether it is considered to be vandalism or not. The children loved creating their massive graffiti wall out which was stuck up in the hall for all to see! The children also perfected their origami skills and made a piece focused on rotational symmetry.

In computing, we have been looking at Crumble kits and how to programme a light (sparkle) and motor to follow our commands. The children loved experimenting with this and created some very impressive pieces of coding! This term, we are looking at data bases and how to sort and order large pieces of information. The children will be able to hunt through large data sets and find what they need quickly!

In DT, the children have tasted different flavours of scones and decided they hate them all!! Despite this, the children have started to design their cheese scones and we will be making them in the last week of term!

In English, the children have just began writing their first draft all about mountains! They have found loads of interesting information about mountains across the world and have made a fantastic start on their information page. At the end of this term, the children will be heading down to year 2 to teach them all about what they have learned!

We are very proud to announce that Freddie and Rania have won our poetry competition and have been invited to perform their poems at Rochdale's Poet Laureate ceremony. We are so proud of them and have loved hearing them perform their poems to the school in our assembly!
