The children in Year 3 have a had a very busy week full of assessments. All of the children have worked extremely hard to show just how much progress they have made throughout the year.
However, as well as the work they have put into completing their assessments, the children have also celebrated Science Week by making their own time keeping pendulums and investigating how these can be made to swing faster and slower. In doing this, the children looked at the effect of both adding and removing weight and lengthening and shortening the string used to create the pendulum. As the photos below suggest, this was activity that the children very much enjoyed. In our regular science lessons, the children have been thinking about magnetic and non-magnetic materials and using a selection of magnets to sort these into groups.
In addition to all the excitement caused by creating pendulums, the children, in Design Technology, thought about designing their own moving monster (or mummy as the case will be) using shape nets to create the sarcophagus that the mummy will eventually rise from. Keep your eyes peeled for the finished products arriving home.
On Thursday 21st March Year 1 will be going on a local area walk. They will be walking to the local post office to post a letter and looking at human and physical features in the local area. Children will need to wear their school uniform, an outdoor coat and suitable footwear.
Thank You.
Yahya attended the spelling bee at Matthew Moss today and did very well reaching the 3rd round.
Well done Yahya!
The Connect Song Festival comprised of 8 schools from the network - Heybrook, Moorhouse, Springside, Hamer, Norden, Marland Hill, Belfield and Spotland. Around 180 children took part in this year's song festival which had the theme 'Happiness'. Three whole school songs were performed and accompanied by musicians from the Rochdale Music Service.
Schools had chosen and prepared one song to the other schools. It was a fantastic morning of singing enjoyed by all. During the Summer Term an Instrumental Festival for Connect schools will be held at Marland Hill, where children will get the opportunity to share and celebrate their musical achievements.
This week in school the children have celebrated science week and the theme for this year is time. The children have enjoyed a variety of experiments looking at how something can change over time.
In year 4, the children used plastic bottles to create water clocks. They cut the bottle in half and used a compass to poke a hole in the lid. They then added water (with food colouring in) and timed how long it took for the water to pass through the hole and into the bottom of the bottle. The children marked the bottle to show every minute that had passed. They thoroughly enjoyed this experiment.
In Year 2 the children observed different types of jellies. The children made 3 different types of jellies adding different ingredients to each jelly and then observing if this affected the time it took the jelly to set. The children checked the jellies every half an hour and were definitely shocked at the results!
