Child directed play
Playing with your child for 10 – 15 minutes a day is a great way to support your child’s development and build positive relationships with your child. Play is an opportunity for your child to learn, discover and explore. Play improves behaviour. Play develops the basic skills for social interactions i.e. language development, turn taking and expressing feelings appropriately.
Tips for child directed play.
· Be an attentive and appreciative audience. Turn off the television and put mobile phones away.
· Follow your child’s lead; let them choose what to play with.
· Go at your child’s pace, follow do not lead the activity.
· Do not compete with your child; they will not want to play with you if it is stressful.
· Engage in pretend or imaginative play/ role-play.
· Give your child choices and allow them to change their mind.
· Curb your desire to ask for help, give enough support so your child does not become too frustrated but do not take over.
· Reward quiet or purposeful play with your attention.
· Have fun, these times are special.
Our topic this half term has been ‘Machines’ and we have been learning all about different machines and what they do. The children made their own inventions in the outdoor area and at our junk modelling station. They have also been busy fixing lots of broken machines in our role play area. The children have really enjoyed learning about different construction vehicles this week. Talk to your child to see if they can tell you the names of any of the machines that you would see on a building site.
We have also been thinking about things that we like and dislike and how it is ok to like different things. Connecting to this, the children were able to make sandwiches and decided which filling they would like out of three choices: jam, marmalade and soft cheese. The children loved spreading the butter and filling, cutting the sandwich in half and most importantly eating the sandwich.
It is a very exciting time in Reception at the moment as we are getting ready for the Christmas Concert. We are busy rehearsing, by doing lots of dancing and singing and we can’t wait to see you on Tuesday 17th December to show off our amazing talents.
Well done to the following children that have been selected to sit at the Captain’s Table.
