At Marland Hill, we are learning a new sign every week. Why not learn with us at home too!
Every week children that display good manners are chosen to sit at the Captain’s Table for dinner. Well done to the following children that have been selected to sit at the Captain’s Table.

This week, on Thursday, the children in Year 3 visited Hollingworth Lake to try their hand at canoeing and sailing. Whilst lots were a little uncertain to begin with, nerves were very quickly forgotten once on the water and everyone had a fantastic time! The best news of the day being that no one fell in the water!
This week also saw the children in class 3B make a start on their own Mayan style face mask. To do this, the children used papier mâché to create layers which will eventually harden and create the base for the masks. In the coming weeks, the children will use a range of resources to decorate their masks to make them look more authentic. We look forward to revealing the final product!
This week Year 3, 4 and 5 visited Hollingworth Lake and took part in various activities such as Kayaking and paddle boarding.
For Deaf Awareness Week, Ms Shah (Teacher of the deaf) did an assembly to outline the challenges deaf people face when communicating with others. The children took part in learning the different hearing equipment deaf people use, how to fingerspell the alphabet and listened to Jodie Ounsley (a deaf gladiator, author and role model) talk about the challenges she faced because of her deafness. It was lovely to see a lot of children had already learnt how to fingerspell their names and were eager to learn more signs.
By learning British Sign Language, our children will be able to communicate better with deaf people not only in our school but out in society too. Together, we can overcome the barriers deaf people face. A special shout out to Miss Shabir's class for learning how to sign the song 'Sunshine in my heart.
