Promoting language and school readiness in your child

· Read to your child daily from being a baby. Choose a quiet time, turn off the television and music and put your phone away.

· Use exaggerated voices and facial expressions to help maintain your child’s interest when reading books.

· Point to pictures in books and describe what you see.

· Re read favourite books many times and encourage your child to read alongside you.

· Reading at bedtime helps support calm bedtime routines.

· Praise all attempts at language or reading, even turning pages and handling books well are behaviours that should be praised in young children.

· Describe what your child is doing rather than asking questions when you are playing with your child. Use positional language, count, describe colours etc.

· Notice when your child is being calm, working hard, concentrating well, staying patient or sharing and reward this with positive attention i.e. “I am really proud of how patient you are being, well done”.

· Look at what your child is interested in and talk about their interests with them.

· Praise and reward all attempts at independent self care i.e toileting, dressing, washing, eating etc. this will help your child settle in to school confidently.
